During the consultation the osteopath will take a comprehensive case history, discussing the symptoms you are experiencing and asking questions about your general health and lifestyle.
During the assessment the osteopath may (depending on the presenting complaint) perform a visual examination, study your posture and movement and perform general health checks for example take your blood pressure, test your co-ordination and reflexes. The osteopath will perform a structural examination by using their hands to gently feel for restrictions or structural problems in your muscles, tissues, joints and bones. You may be required to remove some of your outer clothing.
The osteopath will outline what form of treatment they propose to use. Osteopaths are trained to use a variety of different techniques. They use their hands to gently work on the muscles, soft tissues, bones and joints of your body. Should the osteopath feel that another form of treatment would be more appropriate for you they will refer you to another health practitioner. They will also advise you on how to avoid the problem happening again and may give you specific exercises to help maintain your balanced alignment.
Adverse reactions? Many people feel immediately better after treatment, however, a few may feel some aches and pains. This is temporary, commonly known as the “treatment reaction”, it generally lasts for 24-48 hours and is caused by the body adjusting to treatment. However, should you have any concerns please do not hesitate to speak with your practitioner.
